ABOUT THE NETWORK
The mission, audience, and volunteer team behind the Tidewater GMRS repeater hub.
Signal Grid is the online hub for the Tidewater GMRS repeater network, a volunteer-run community serving licensed General Mobile Radio Service operators across the Hampton Roads and Tidewater region of Virginia. The platform brings local radio operators together in one tactical space to coordinate directed nets, share technical knowledge, provide/relay GMRS community Emergency Communications, and stay informed about repeater status, weather alerts, and community events between on-air sessions. The majority of our members have military, fire or law enforcement backgrounds. GMRS disaster volunteers also coordinate and work together with Ham radio operators through this site. Additionally, community disaster relief coordination between the GMRS and Ham radio community flow through Signal Grid's platform.
The network is built primarily for the area's Disabled Veteran GMRS operators. Those studying for new licensees to obtain their first callsign, and anyone interested in joining a disciplined, community-driven volunteer, service-oriented radio group in the Tidewater area. Members use the hub to browse a live repeater directory with coverage maps, join net calls through an integrated Net Control console, and log check-ins that build toward participation milestones and earned rank recognition.
Signal Grid is built and maintained by a small team of dedicated volunteer operators and site administrators with strong military, civil service and business backgrounds who also manage or own the repeater infrastructures, coordinate weather and SKYWARN reporting, public-service event coordination, and emergency preparedness resources. The platform is funded through community donations and branded merchandise sales, and its development is guided by feedback from the operators who use it every day.
